The Original Great Southern Brevet

Tuesday 17 January 2012

So you think you are tough riding the Brevet?

Meet renowned Brevet rider Samuel James Holden Sylvester, or Sylvie as he was known to friends.  Born in 1897, Sylvie conquered all the South Island main passes with pack and cycle long before the invention of the mountain bike.

Brevet style circa 1920. Has much changed?

Sylvie was known to be "somewhat scornful of vacillation and weakness of character". Not traits of a Great Southern Brevet 2012 starter that's for sure!
